Long ago, in the age of Reaganomics, swelling synths and frivolous lyrics trickled down into the lives of two college students.
He loved Barry Manilow. She loved Air Supply. And one night under a disco ball, they discovered that they loved each other.
I was born a few years later. For two decades, I laughed off the foolish nostalgia of the music my parents listen to. Then I wrote a song a few years ago that my sound engineer said sounded just like an old Duran Duran record. “Dammit,” I thought. “It really does.”
I’m learning to embrace my inner 80s. Dramatic choruses and iconic perms are in my blood, after all. This show is an ode to the music my parents listen to — and an ode to the mulleted Gen-Xers who brought me into the world.
