Is it wrong for a hip, urban lass who grew up in the chrome plated shadows of Eli’s and Bloomingdale’s to harbor a secret fondness for open fields and the earthy twang of Loretta Lynn? In her new cabaret show, “Town and Country,” acclaimed singer Wendy Scherl offers proof to the contrary as she gives full reign to her wildly diverse musical passions. Devised by her ace team of director Barry Kleinbort and musical director Christopher Denny, “Town and Country” combines edgy urban numbers by New York writers like Andrew Lippa and David Yazbek with countrified classics originally introduced by Dolly Parton and Nancy Sinatra. Also included in this eclectic mix are several cuts from Wendy’s new CD, her very first, titled “You’ll See” which has just been released on Harbinger Records, including the jazzy title tune written by West Coast composer/pianist Carroll Coates. For “Town and Country,” Wendy will be performing with Musical Director, Christopher Denny on piano.
Cover is $25 with a 2 drink minimum.
“Town and Country” is further proof of Wendy Scherl’s personal commitment to all kinds of music. Just because a gal was weaned on bagels and bialys doesn’t mean she can’t dish out the grits when given the opportunity. “Town and Country” is just that.
